Life altering experience – Whale Shark diving. The day started off dark and gloomy. It was chilly and the sea was choppy, but the sun peaked through on odd occasions and gave us a glimmer of the turquoise splendour all around. Despite the unanticipated weather conditions, the atmosphere on the boat was electric. Seeing the biggest creatures in the ocean was all the driving force we needed to fuel us on to make the big dive into the deep blue. And dive we did. Not once but at least 6 times! The whale shark sighting professionals had a plane in the air to the spot the gentle giants and once they were found, they radioed in their location to the boat’s captain. All the excited divers waited with drawn breath for each time the call came in and felt the boat swerve through the ocean charting a course for when we might spot another shark. The biggest sighted was 9 metres – spotted and sleek. We all jumped in just in time to see it cruise by not far below the surface. Once it swam by, we were hauled back into the boat to rendezvous to the next sighting. Heart pumping and jaw dropping. All that could be seen on the boat’s deck that evening was chattering teeth with gigantic smiles. The small town of Exmouth in Western Australia was a fantastic host for this once in a lifetime trip. Our team was splendid and qualified beyond measure. We lived this dream.
